Sustainable Development Coordinator


Are you a recent graduate with a degree or diploma in Community Economic Development or related field?


Community economic development (CED) is a community-driven process where communities identify and initiate their own solutions to economic, social and environmental issues to build healthy, economically viable communities. CED contains principles and goals based on a grassroots approach to development where communities choose deliberate actions to influence the local economy and improve the quality of life for its residents.

Some examples of CED principles include:

·                     mobilizing local resources (people, capital, organizations, etc.) to meet local needs

·                     re-investment of profits into the local economy

Some of the goals of CED are to:

·                     Create employment

·                     Renew, stabilize and/or improve the community and local economy

·                     Develop local economic links

·                     Improve the physical environment of the community

The Internship Opportunity

A one-year paid internship is available beginning mid November, 2024 at Community Futures Shuswap (CFS). The candidate will have graduated from a university or college program directly related to Community Economic Development, or a related field,  and is looking to gain valuable job experience in this field.

 

CFS is a community-based organization that contributes to the social and economic well being of the Shuswap region by providing CED project development and management, support to community projects, small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs, tailored to their individual needs.

 

CFS key priorities include local food production and food security, clean tech, environment and health, wellness and inclusiveness. These priorities help set the direction of our CED focused sustainable development work.

 

Specific job duties and skills of the Internship include:

•     people skills – working with a variety of individuals and organizations in the community, negotiating, developing partnerships and networking

•     communication skills – listening skills, empathy, developing and delivering public presentations, public and media relations, developing a communications plan

•     technical expertise – knowledge of the community economic development process, ESG, skills in research, planning, facilitation, project development and project management, benchmarking, statistics

•     administrative skills – computer skills, file maintenance, database/CRM management, website and social media content and maintenance, etc.

•     flexibility – to adapt to change and new ideas

•     planning expertise – knowledge and experience with strategic plans and municipal plans

•     marketing abilities – developing and implementing marketing plans and raising funds through grant writing and collaboration with other organizations and key people

 

Opportunity details:

Regular office hours are 8:00 to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday. This is a 1-year term paid position at $23/hr., 35 hrs./week and includes extended health care benefits.  There is a good possibility that the position may continue beyond 1 year depending on funding, ability of the successful applicant and the work completed in the internship. Limited evening and weekend work may be required related to meetings, events, training, conferences etc.
